ICCWorld Twenty20: Yuvi out, India hurt

It's bad news for Team India. An injured Yuvraj Singh is out of the T20 World Cup at the extremely crucial juncture — on the eve of the big semi-final against West Indies on Thursday.
Coming at the all-important No 4 position, Yuvraj's absence will be a huge headache for skipper MS Dhoni who will now have to figure out whether Ajinkya Rahane or Manish Pandey, Yuvraj's replacement in the squad, will be better placed to carry on the game for India in its quest to reach Kolkata for the big Final.
Yuvraj sustained the ankle twist injury during the match against Australia at Mohali where he was seen hobbling in uncontrollable pain till he got out. Doctors say that he has developed a liquid bubble on the ankle joint due to the injury and will be out of action for at least a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, Rahane who is otherwise a rock solid bat well versed in the T20 format, has been out of sorts for some time. Pandey, on the other hand, has made waves with run mounts in IPL but would be a new entrant in the Indian dressing room for this tournament. Dhoni is known for his repulsion about changing winning combinations. But now that he is compelled to do so, he is most likely to go for Ajinkya over Pandey as the former has been a part of the training sessions and team meetings all through this campaign and would, thus, be better equipped to tackle the all-important spot that Yuvraj occupied in the squad.
"Manish has just joined the party. We will have to look at everything before taking a call on him for tomorrow's squad," Team Director Ravi Shastri said. Pandey has not had much exposure in the T20 format at the international level, having played only two matches thus far in the Indian squad, against Zimbabwe in Harare in July 2015. However, he has played four ODIs and most recently returned from Australia in the last series high on his maiden century in the ODI format which he scored in Sydney. The No 4 position has become overly important and full of responsibilities because the two openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, have been facing a bad patch with the bat all through this tournament and Raina further down has never been as listless as he is now. "Yuvi's three overs in the last match (against Australia) were brilliant. He put the check in the scoring and allowed us to come back into the contest. After the first four overs, it was a no-contest. At one point, it looked like a 200 plus score which would have been very difficult to chase on that surface... so his absence will make an impact," Shastri admitted.
