Rowdy Rathore: Well, comedy me!

Rowdy Rathore

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Paresh Ganatra
At: PVR & others
Rated: 8/10
Don’t angry me. But yes, you can comedy me. Comedy me, because Akshay Kumar has decided to have a blast and all of you are invited. And this unabashed bash is a cacophony of everything ridiculous and yet strangely entertaining. So if you have any pretensions of taking your brains along to this party, just be his gate guard doing Chinta Ta Ta (smashing backsides into a chutney) to people of your kind!
Those who are inside can, meanwhile, get ready for a multi-pronged attack on the senses, something you are shocked to say you quite enjoyed. If you manage to not get hijacked by Akshay’s pants, there is unadulterated bufoonery wrapping up all the action and drama. There’s a bit of Agneepath, a lot of Singham and dollops of Dabangg but it is the Khiladi in a very rowdy Rathore who is adding up 2 plus 2 for a clean 22, no questions asked!
Shocking pink, fluorescent green, stark purple, dhaani green, yellow, mustard, red, rust, turquoise, indigo, orange — no I am not comedying you, they really are the shades of this rowdy Rathore’s pants. He gives Sonakshi Sinha a run for her colours and, of course, compels you to wonder if all is well with co-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s otherwise sane art sense.
In a double role with just the sexy moochh to differentiate, Akshay monopolises this film without a pause doing almost everything himself. Dragged into a police-criminal vendetta war, the small time thief gets to fight a scintillating, though totally unexplained war in an unexplained territory, And as you try to get out of the shocker of the villain taking a cow pee bath under the animal’s backside, drinking some of it, you wonder why there is so much Chikmaglur in Devgarh, a south Indian villain in Bihari terrain!
But then, don’t think me, because Rowdy Rathore is all about a happy kind of mindlessness, the best stress buster of this weekend. Once out of the hall, you may feel uncomfortable about having enjoyed such an acute form of bufoonery, but then this is Rowdy Rathore directed by a choreographer-dancer Prabhu Deva and not a director-director of the Bhansali kind.
As for Sonakshi, she is good, spunky adornment though Rathore, I guess, is too rowdy to notice that it is not chikni kamar pe teri mera dil phisal gaya but an unending moti kamariya pe camera ka dil ruk gaya. Other than that, go have a blast and, if you have time, play a shot or two on Sonakshi’s cricket stadium big forehead!
